The research group Prodep has its origin in a set of research and extension activities based at UFMG since 2003. At the origin of the group are research papers on participatory budgeting carried out in 2002 and 2003 and have generated important publications: Democracy and the public space in Latin America, Democratic innovation in Brazil and Participatory publics: civil society and new institutions published by Comparative Politics. The research area of ​​the group includes mainly topics related to Participatory Democracy and Participatory Institutions, as well as Innovations in Democracy, Participatory Management, Social Movements, Participation and the Internet. A second important feature of this group is the close relationship between research and extension. During this period, the group organized several training and specialization courses. The PRODEP coordinator is Professor Leonardo Avritzer, who holds a degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1983), a Master's degree in Political Science from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1987), a Ph.D. in Political Sociology from the New School for Social Research 1993) and postdoctoral degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1998-1999) and (2003).
